What is a CT Tech?

5 Steps to Become a CT Tech

  1. Check the requirements in your area.
    The requirements for a CT tech vary by state. Most states require a certificate or licensure to practice.  The computed tomography certificate through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist is the most widely recognized.  Some states also require ongoing education courses to maintain your licensure.
  2. Earn an associate degree.
    Many technical schools or community colleges offer programs in radiography, diagnostic medical sonography or nuclear medicine. The programs have courses on patient care, medical terminology, and anatomy to prepare you to care for patients.  
  3. Complete your first certification.
    After you finish your coursework, you must first complete certification through the ARRT in radiography, nuclear medicine technology or radiation therapy. After your initial certification, you must complete a certificate to earn your CT credential.
  4. Qualify for a CT certificate.
    To qualify for a CT certificate through the ARRT, you must complete 16 hours of education within the last two years in the following areas: patient care, safety, image production, and procedures.   5. Pass the Computed Tomography exam.
    When you are ready to take the exam, you must submit documentation of your education courses and your 125 scans to the ARRT. The exam consists of 125 questions related to your coursework. The test can be retaken up to 3 times within 3 years of your initial test date.

Requirements of a Radiology Tech

Most states require radiology technologists to be licensed, and a majority require an RT tech to earn a certification, Registered Radiologic Technologist (R.T.). An RT tech must graduate from an accredited program and pass the exam given by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

A CT technologist must first complete an accredited educational program in the radiology field and register with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). They may go on to complete more advanced training to become a CT tech.
