Nicknamed "the Heart of America" for its central location, Kansas has a lot to offer a traveling nurse. Whether you prefer to spend your days off exploring a busy city or appreciating the natural scenery of your location, you can find it in Kansas.
Being the biggest city in the state, Wichita is the go-to place in Kansas for a city dweller travel nurse. Old Town is just one neighborhood in the city, but it features more than 100 shops, restaurants, bars, and museums in walking distance to one another. If you prefer some retail therapy after a long shift, go to Bradley Fair, a huge outdoor mall featuring high-end stores and great restaurants. You can also check out Sedgwick County Zoo, one of the largest zoos in the US.
Lawrence, home of the University of Kansas, is a city made beautiful by the historic college campus that's a tourist destination all its own. Kansas sports enthusiasts flock to Lawrence, especially during basketball season, to share in the fandom of one of college basketball's most exciting crowds. Gather your nurse friends and see a game.
Kansas offers tons of options for outdoor recreation to take advantage of during your travel assignment. Hikers and history buffs alike will head to the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. If you prefer the water, head to one of Kansas's many lakes to do some boating or fishing.
Kansas is a proud state with many fairs and festivals celebrating its heritage throughout the year. While you're there, head to Wichita's Jazz in the Woods to enjoy some live music in a beautiful outdoor setting or try some authentic Kansas City-style BBQ at the Johnson County Fair, a traditional county fair in every sense including a bakery contest, carnival, and the coronation of a rodeo queen.
