There's much more to DC than the national monuments. Even in a large city, the outdoor enthusiast will have plenty of places to go. Rock Creek Park, for example, is filled with hills and trails perfect for biking, running, or hiking. You can also rent a boat and go kayaking or sailing in the river.
There is always some sort of celebration going on in Washington, DC. During Passport D.C., for example, you can go into any of the embassies on Embassy Row to get a taste of that particular country. During warmer months, there are outdoor movies projected every week at different locations, sometimes outside the Capitol Building.
